Recognition of diplomas

Bilateral agreements between Switzerland and the European Union have been in force since 2002. With the agreement as to the free movement of persons, the same living, employment and working conditions apply to both EU-citizens and Swiss persons within Switzerland, as well as in the EU.

In Switzerland, EU citizens enjoy, amongst other things, the right to mutual recognition of their diplomas with regard to being allowed to practice within a regulated profession (where a licence is required). The rules for the recognition of diplomas also apply between Switzerland and the EFTA countries (Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein).

Conditions for admission to the labour market

Bilateral contracts with the EU apply only to admission to the labour market (professional recognition). However, they do not regulate admission to further education study courses (academic recognition). In respect of the latter, Switzerland has made bilateral agreements with Germany, Austria, France and Italy.
